Meet Modern Sprout: Co-Founders Sarah and Nick

Meet Modern Sprout

We are a group of creative and curious gardeners who want to enrich people’s lives with plants. We design, collaborate and experiment to bring purposeful products to the world that surprise, delight, simplify and solve the modern-day challenges of growing.

Modern Sprout Herb Garden Jar Grow Kits

Go Green and Grow On

One of the simplest ways to start your self-care green routine is with one of our Grow Kits. Everything’s included, just add water! Choose from herbs, flowers, succulents and more.

Our self-watering herb kits feature a vintage-inspired mason jar outfitted with a passive hydroponic system known as “wicking,” which brings water and nutrients up to the plant's roots. So whether you forget to water, overwater, or both, we’ve got you covered. This year-round indoor planter comes equipped with everything you’ll need to start growing, just add water and set in a sunny window.

Modern Sprout Garden Jar Grow Kit Next to Food

How long does it take to grow?

Herb seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2+ months. Continuous harvesting will encourage a bushy plant and greater yield.

Modern Sprout Garden Jar Grow Kits on Counter

How much sun will it need?

Herbs require at least 6 hours of direct light daily, and should be put in an unobstructed window that faces south, west or east. During winter months you can supplement with a grow light.

Modern Sprout Garden Jar Grow Kit Components

How is it reusable?

The stainless steel net pot and recycled glass grow medium can both be reused—simply rinse with hot water. Add new seeds and use soil or coco pith to help seeds germinate. Use a water soluble fertilizer and follow its instructions.

Rooted in Chicago

What you touch, we’ve touched. We source as much as we can domestically and prioritize manufacturing, assembling and shipping from our hometown. This is important because it supports the community far beyond our walls. In addition to economic stability for our employees and their families, we spend heavily with local companies – from printers to packaging suppliers to the food trucks that show up at our dock to feed our team. When finished goods are imported from overseas, we lose the beneficial ripple effect.

Minimizing Friction, Maximizing Delight

Our approach solves for the challenges of modern plant care with simple-to-use products and creative adaptations to space, light and seasonal constraints.

Unfortunately the cute little pictures of germinating seeds attracts customers. But the reality is that this jar system DOES NOT REALIABLY GROW healthy plants. I planted basil 3 months ago and placed in an east facing window where other existing basil plants were growing fine. The seeds germinated well. But 2 months later, they were less than an inch tall, and the top leaves are still only the 2 little sprout leaves. There are no basil leaves maturing.

After these 2 months mentioned, I bought an AeroGarden (a true hydroponic system) and planted basil seeds in it. Simultaneously I placed the Modsprout jar right next to it so it would receive the exact same lighting quality and schedule. 3-4 weeks later, I have basil plants which have far surpassed the size and health of the Modsprout jar, which is still stunted at barely over an inch, and the leaves are not developing the way they should. (See attached photo comparison)

If the Modsprout jar reliably grew plants, the $20 at Amazon would be about the same price per plant as the Aerogarden. But if you want confident results, don't buy the Modsprout jars.
